On November 23 Signum Corvus hosted a sword and buckler workshop together with friends from AEMMA Toronto and AEMMA Guelph. The workshop was a first event of this kind and proved to be a great opportunity to meet fellow HEMA practitioners and trying something new and different.
Sword and buckler fencing based on the I.33 manuscript is something outside of our traditional curriculum and as a style it is quite original. Being the first preserved fencing manuscript, it offers some distinct guards and techniques, some of them sharing principles with later centuries, some of them rather unique.
I have personally found sword and buckler fighting extremely enjoyable, though similar to other fencing styles that use both hands, perhaps somewhat challenging to master.
Thanks goes to Aaron Bolarinho from AEMMA Toronto who took on the role of instructor!
Given the success of the event, we will definitely be looking to organize more workshops of this kind in the future.
