On September 9 and 10, 2023 Signum Corvus School of Arms and Fencer's guild organized a 2-day workshop in Mississauga on the use of longsword and dussack based on the system of 16th century fencing master Joachim Meyer.
Workshop was led by Petr Turya, founder of the Fencers guild - a premier European fencing organization based in Czechia. Petr is a veteran martial arts practitioner, beginning his journey into HEMA back in 1997. A translator and therapist, in 2010 he co-founded the Fencers' Guild, a project devoted to the research, publishing and instruction of the art of combat using a great array of weapons: longsword, dussack, rapier, dagger, pole weapons and unarmed combat.
Besides authoring the translation of historical sources which the Fencers' Guild employs as a base for its studies, nowadays Petr is still actively involved in combat practice.
This was Petr's first such event in Canada and he really made this workshop a one-of-a-kind experience.
At the event we have welcomed 22 participants from number of HEMA clubs in Ontario, who all made the event a great success! We managed to get through 6 hours of trainings on both Saturday and Sunday and still enjoyed a dinner together on Saturday evening.
Given the success of the event and very positive feedback from the participants, we are hoping to be able to organize more events like this in the future.
